Dance Classes

If you love to dance – or you’d love to try – The National Theatre Ballet School welcomes students of all ages, genders and skill levels. Experience the thrill of learning and performing on The National Theatre’s very own beautiful heritage stage and reap the rewards that come with taking part in the performing arts. You will build confidence and self-expression, meet new friends and enjoy a sense of achievement.

The National Theatre Ballet School has been training dancers for over 80 years. Our supportive, creative teaching staff are some of Australia’s most experienced industry professionals who are passionate about teaching and preparing the dancers of the future. Classes include the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, contemporary, jazz and tap from junior to senior levels; we also hold regular Extension and Elite programs and intensive courses during the holidays.

PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES

Little Nashies (3 – 5 yrs) Tuesday 9:30 am – 10:15 am or Saturday 8:45 am – 9:30 am

Term Three- 10 weeks $150

The Little Nashies Dance Theatre Classes are the ultimate dance theatre sessions for 3 to 5 year olds. They are inspiring a mixture of dance, musical theatre, storytelling, drama, and singing.

The Little Nashies is a unique class that brings musical appreciation with a combination of music introduced, and this could be the presence of a pianist or an introduction to a musical instrument that helps stimulate the students’ imaginations with a wide range of sounds and musical styles.

 This holistic program is developed for strong engagement, musicality, confidence building, imagination, exploring ideas together, and expressing creativity, all while having fun and making new friends. 

 These programs are an introduction to all aspects of performing arts at the National Theatre Ballet School and National Theatre Drama School. Both schools have built this program together as a stepping stone into further exploration of the organisation’s offering.

Dance Play – (4 – 5 yrs) Mon 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Term Three – 10 weeks $180

This preschool program will introduce children to the basics of classical ballet through creativity, storytelling, and imagination. The class is tailored to the young child who has already had their 4th birthday. These classes prepare all students to enter into the Junior school.

Ballet For All

Ballet Principles (9+ yrs) Wed 5:30 – 6:30 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $245

*Perfect for beginners!

This class is ideal for students who are new to ballet and would like to learn the basic foundations of ballet. technique. In the ballet principles class students will be guided by the teacher to discover the correct requirements such as posture, turn-out, coordination and line therefore this class is also suitable for a student who can only commit to once a week training but would like to keep up their ballet technique.

Ballet Adult  (17+ yrs) Tue 10:30 am – 11:30 am

Term Three 10 weeks $300 or $35 per class via casual booking

This class is ideal for the discerning adult who would like to try ballet for the first time or the adult learner who wishes to improve on their existing skills. The mind, body and spirit will be challenged through co-ordinated enchainments as well as focusing on the foundational elements of classical ballet such as posture, turn-out and coordination.
Experienced dancers may also wish to enrol in the Saturday Open Ballet class for the term or on a casual basis.

Royal Academy Of Dance (RAD)

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Pre-Primary (5 yrs +) Sat 10:30 am – 11:30 am 

Term Three – 10 weeks $255

*Prerequisites: Must be five years of age to enrol 

Your young dancer will learn the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Pre- Primary ballet, which will give them a solid foundation and introduction to learning classical ballet. This class is designed for students who can attend once a week and have had their 5th birthday.

 *One class per week

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Primary (6+ yrs) Thur 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm & Sat at 11.30 am – 12:30 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 classes $430

*Pre-requisites: The recommended age is from 6 years or in Grade 1 at school.

Primary ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week. This level will educate the student in a more formal way and build on the skills to be able to perform a series of prepared ballet exercises. They will learn the basics of secure posture, correct weight placement, coordination, control, line, spatial awareness, and dynamics of classical ballet.

*Two classes per week.  To be eligible for the first formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance or Class Award, students must undertake the recommended training hours.

*All  Junior Level  classes will be involved in one production per year on the home stage of the school The National Theatre, Melbourne

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Grade 1 (7+ yrs) Mon & Wed at 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 lessons $515

*Prerequisites: Must be 7 years of age to enrol or in Grade 2 at School

Grade one ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award.

Each candidate will develop a well rounded understanding of classical ballet technique appropriate for their age range while nurturing the awareness of artistry and dynamics through music. The syllabus will promote the joy of movement, creative interpretation, and a sense of dance and performance quality.

*Two classes per week. To be eligible for the formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance or Class Award, students must undertake the recommended training hours.

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Grade 2 (8+ yrs) Mon & Wed at 4:30 pm – 5:45 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 lessons $515

*Pre-requisites: RAD Grade 1 or equivalent must be 8 years of age to enrol or in Grade 3 at school. 

Grade two ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award. Each student will develop a well rounded understanding of classical ballet technique appropriate for their age range while nurturing the awareness of artistry and dynamics through music. The syllabus will promote the joy of  movement, creative interpretation, and a sense of dance and performance quality. Students will also learn a character dance.

*Two classes per week accumulating 60 hours of training to be eligible for an Examination or Class Award

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Grade 3 (9+ yrs) Mon & Wed at 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 lessons $580

*Pre-requisites: RAD Grade 2 or equivalent, must be 9 years of age to enrol, or in Grade 4 at school.

Grade three, ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award.

Each student will develop a well rounded understanding of classical ballet technique appropriate for their age range while nurturing the awareness of artistry and dynamics through music. Grade four ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award.

Each student will develop a higher level and well rounded understanding of classical ballet technique appropriate for their age range while nurturing the awareness of artistry and dynamics through music. The syllabus will promote the joy of movement, creative interpretation, and a sense of dance and performance quality. Students will also learn character dance.

*Two classes per week. To be eligible for the formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance or Class Award, students must undertake the recommended training hours.

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Grade 5 (11+ yrs) Mon & Wed at 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 lessons $580

*Pre-requisites: RAD Grade 4 or equivalent, must be 11 years of age to enrol, or in Grade 6 at school.

At Grade 5 (RAD), ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend 1-week intensive workshop to be prepared for Examination or Class Award and assessed on their ability to:

  • Perform a series of prepared ballet exercises with secure posture, correct weight placement, co-ordination, control, line, spatial awareness and dynamics
  • Dance in time and respond to the music
  • Dance with expression and communication
  • Perform two dances

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Intermediate Foundation (11+ yrs) Tue 6:30 – 8:00 & Fri at 4:30 – 6:00 pm 

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 classes $580

*Pre-requisite: Must be 11 years of age to enrol 

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the first  Vocational Level examination. Students will need to demonstrate classical ballet at a high level including pointe work.  Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry, dynamics,and musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation that  will motivate students preparing for these Examinations. The student will explore the  joy in movement, creative interpretation, and performance quality.

*Two classes per week. To be eligible for the formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance or Class Award, students must undertake the recommended training hours.

*All classes at this level will be invited to enrol in the specialist Stretch and Conditioning coaching classes

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Intermediate (12+ yrs) Tue 6:30 – 8:00 pm & Fri 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 classes $580

*Pre-requisites: Must be 12 years of age to enrol 

Ballet students will need to demonstrate classical ballet at a high level including pointe work. Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry, dynamics, and musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation that will motivate students preparing for these Examinations. The student will explore the joy in movement, creative interpretation, and performance quality.

*Two classes per week. To be eligible for the formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance or Class Award, students must undertake the recommended training hours.

*All classes at this level will be invited to enrol into the specialist Stretch and Conditioning coaching classes

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Advanced Foundation (14+ Yrs) Tue 4:30 – 6:15 pm & Fri 6:00 – 7:30 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 classes $580

*Pre-requisite: RAD Intermediate (7 years equivalent training) Must have completed their Intermediate Examination or an equivalent level in another syllabus.

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the 3rd  Vocational Level examination. Students will need to demonstrate a more mature and a much higher level of understanding of the classical and pointe work technique  Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry, dynamics and musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation on pointe.  The student will explore and be motivated by the joy of advanced movements, creative interpretation, and performance quality.

*Two classes per week. To be eligible for the formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance or Class Award, students must undertake the recommended training hours.

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Advanced 2 (15 yrs +) Tue 4:30 – 6:15pm & Fri 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Term Three: 10 weeks, 20 classes $580

*Pre-requisite: RAD Advanced one (9 years equivalent training)

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the 5th  Vocational Level examination. Students will need to demonstrate a more mature and a much higher level of understanding of the classical and pointe work technique. Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry, dynamics, and musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation on pointe.  The student will explore and be motivated by the joy of advanced movements, creative interpretation, and performance quality.

Jazz

Primary Tap / Jazz (5 +yrs) Thursday 4.30 – 5.30 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $245

This combination class encourages our young dances to learn the basics of jazz techniques and the tap sounds of shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. A good class for beginners as it introduces the child to two forms of dance within one class.

Jazz Pre Junior  (7+yrs) Mon 5:45 pm – 6:45 pm
Jazz Junior (9+ yrs) Mon 4:45 pm – 5:45 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $245

Contemporary

Contemporary Junior (8 yrs +) Wed 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $245

This class focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up more elaborate dance routines.

Contemporary Intermediate (11 yrs +) Tues 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $245

It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up more elaborate dance routines.

Contemporary Senior  (14 yrs +) Tues 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $245

Advanced and complex steps are created exploring challenging aspects of the contemporary technique improvisation. This class is highly recommended for students studying VCE Dance. It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up more elaborate dance routines.

Specialist Classes

FRIDAY 9 JULY

Join an exciting full, fun day of training in a safe, supportive and motivating all-male environment with like-minded boys who are interested in ballet.

The workshops will include male body conditioning, strengthening exercises, ballet training, male variations and repertoire from full- length ballet classics such as Swan Lake and Giselle, and a group discussion about what it’s like to be a boy in ballet.

You will learn technique from industry experts including Ballet School Artistic Director Damian Smith; Mr Smith has been involved in the ballet industry nationally and internationally for the past 29 years including 18 years as Principal Dancer with the acclaimed San Francisco Ballet.

This workshop gives boys in ballet a rare opportunity to learn from a male industry expert teacher, and to learn alongside other boys who share an interest in ballet. And even importantly – to make new friends and have fun.

Artistic Director’s Intermediate/ Senior Open Class Ages 11+yrs 

Time: Thursday 4:30pm – 6:00pm

Cost: $320 for a 10 week Term, $35 casual rate (email to enquire about casual bookings).

This class gives students an exceptional experience regarding exposure to the Artistic Director, Mr.Damian Smith. Damian brings with him more than 25 years of international experience as a dancer with companies such as the Boston Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, Ballet Du Nord, New York City Ballet and 18 years as Principal Dancer with the highly acclaimed San Francisco Ballet.
Artistry development and technique is a focus on developing the young dancer’s ability. Learn to incorporate musicality, breath, and grace on top of technique development.

Musical Theatre Ages 10 to 14 

Time: Thursday 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Cost: Term Three 10 weeks $245

A Triple threat class…

Our musical theatre classes are a must for any student who would like to complement their dance and acting training and develop more performance skills. 

You’ll be given high-level training in voice, acting, movement and dance. You’ll learn to tell a story by using your entire body, and you’ll be taught to develop a broad range of musical theatre styles. This class can be taken as a stand alone class but it is highly recommended students also attend other dance/Acting classes to reach a Triple Threat standard.

Stretch and Conditioning

Intermediate Stretch & Conditioning (11+ yrs) Tue 5:30 – 6:30 pm

Term Three 10 weeks $230

 These very important classes have been set aside so each student can work on elements of their technique in a more holistic way. These classes will improve any discerning dancer who wishes to improve and develop their training. The conditioning exercises will help strengthen the core and refine movement patterns to secure the classical ballet elements of posture, turn-out and weight placements. The flexibility component will help with alignments and body lines.

Extension Classes

Ballet Junior Extension (8 years + by invitation) Saturday 12.30 – 1.30 pm

*Prerequisite: This class is by invitation and assessment. Once assessed, enrolment is completed through the enrolment form.

The extension class has been designed for the younger students who wish to extend their dance technique. This class explores the harmonious engagement of the body through carefully constructed conditioning and stretching exercises. Students are also challenged by learning advanced ballet enchainments. To be eligible for this program students must already be attending at least two other ballet classes.

Ballet Intermediate Extension (11 years + by invitation) Saturday 1.30 – 3.00pm

*Prerequisite: All students must be on pointe to attend this level class. This class is by invitation and assessment. Once assessed, enrolment is completed through the enrolment form.

This classical ballet/pointe extension program has been designed for Intermediate age students who wish to improve their dance technique. These classes are based on the Vaganova technique exploring the harmonious engagement of the upper and lower body through carefully constructed enchainments. To be eligible for this program students must already be attending at least two other ballet classes. The class is ideal for students wanting more body conditioning and advanced ballet steps.

Ballet Senior Open Class (15 yrs +) Sat 9:00 am – 10.30 am

This class is suitable for all  Full-Time & Pre-Professional dancers of advanced level. It is also ideal for professional dancers who want to keep up their training and conditioning.

Elite Program – 12 hours of training per week 11 yrs +

Elite Program: is designed to offer students with potential the opportunity to increase their hours of training while remaining at their academic school. Combined with their syllabus work, students will be challenged with more hours of training in both Classical Ballet, Pointe work, Contemporary, Jazz Dance, Character Dance, Repertoire,  Stretch and Conditioning To inquire about this development schedule, please contact the Associate Director, Susan Sargison, via enquiries@nationaltheatre.org.au

Elite Transitional Program: as per the Elite Program, with the addition of the opportunity to experience classes in a full–time environment. Classes offer up to 20 hours of training per week.

This program is by audition and interview with the Artistic Director Mr. Damian Smith.

Both programs enable the students to prepare physically and mentally for the rigors of Full-Time Ballet training.
