Sharing stories of The National (1974-2024)

Home / About Us / Recollections

The National Melbourne celebrates 50 years in St Kilda this August/September and we’re searching for personal and professional recollections that help us tell the story of The National Theatre, Ballet School and Drama School from 1974-2024.

As staff at The National can attest, many visitors to the venue have a story to share. Whether they are attending classes, watching or performing in a show, dropping off their talented young ones, or completing deliveries, providing technical services or simply passing by, locals and visitors are keen to share their memories of ‘The Nash’ as it is affectionately known. Visitors often reminisce about ‘the good old days’, recollecting times they or their family and friends were on stage, in the studios or in the audience.

With a history spanning more than a century, the building houses myriad stories and memories that reach across generations.

If you, your family members or friends and colleagues have a story to tell, we’d love to hear from you. Recollections will become a trove of treasures including oral and written histories, old programs, posters or photos,

or just a simple note to say I remember when…

Over the coming months, we will collate your recollections of The National and share them on our social media channels with the aim of building a digital gallery of stories, memorabilia and ephemera that will be available for all to see.
