Director of The Drama School

Full time: $80,000 – 85,000 + 10% superannuation

The National Theatre in St Kilda is run by a team of people who are passionate about where they work and the work that they do. Our organisation comprises two training institutions for Drama and Ballet, an 800-seat venue, and a 50-seat studio theatre. Our professional team includes people skilled in teaching, directing, production, technicians, venue relationship management, front of house, ticketing, finance, administration, marketing, and fundraising.

The National Theatre Drama School in Melbourne is Victoria’s longest-established actor training institution, and one of the leading acting schools in Australia. Based in its own purpose-built facilities in St Kilda, the school offers a range of full-time and part-time acting courses to help people from a range of backgrounds, ages and abilities develop their skills in Drama and the performing arts.

The courses offered includes the nationally accredited professional training course, the full- time acting course Advanced Diploma of Acting (10884NAT) as well as a wide range of popular recreational programs for both adults and children. As well as a professional actor training component, our drama courses also include development of related skills including directing, producing, design, and writing for stage and screen.

About the role

We are looking for an Acting teacher with the passion and experience to join our team and lead the National Theatre Drama School through a period of positive change and growth.

This leadership role is responsible for ensuring that the National Theatre Drama School is delivering an Advanced Diploma in Acting course that is relevant, rigorous, and diverse, equipping students with the skills required to enter the demanding and competitive performing arts industry with confidence. We are a modest school focused on supporting the individual student to flourish and achieve the success they are striving for.

The National Theatre Drama School is an RTO and, in conjunction with the Head of Schools Administration, this role is responsible for working with to ensure that the course is compliant.

Working closely with the CEO you will contribute to raising the profile of the Drama School and increasing the numbers of enrolled students to both the Full-Time and Part-Time courses.

You will have:
  • Extensive experience in a similar position or equivalent industry experience.
  • Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment (TAE40116).
  • Demonstrated experience of 3yrs+ teaching students seeking to join the professional performing arts industry.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills, including the ability to interact, provide authoritative advice, liaise with people from diverse backgrounds, and manage relationships with key stakeholders at all levels.
  • Extensive industry relationships with directors, designers, actors, writers that span a diversity including people who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, people of colour and people who identify as LGBTQIA+
  • Current Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain).
  • Knowledge of workplace health & safety in a theatre environment
  • An attitude that relishes variety and thrive in an environment where adaptability is required.
  • An interest to collaborate with the Artistic Director of the National Theatre Ballet School.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends from time to time.
