Ballet Part-Time Courses

 The National Theatre Ballet School offers a wide variety of dance training including Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, contemporary, jazz and tap from junior to senior levels. The school also provides, holiday courses, Extension & Elite programs. The knowledge and skills gained through completion of the RAD’s qualifications provide lifelong learning and provide pathways to recognized achievement at a high level in dance performance.

PRE SCHOOL CLASSES

Monday 4:00- 5:00pm 4 - 5 yrs

This preschool program will introduce children to the basics of classical ballet through creativity, storytelling and imagination. The class is tailored to the young child who has already had their 4th birthday. Please see our new "Little Nashies" programme for earlier age ranges.

Royal Academy Of Dance (RAD)

Thursdays 5:30-6:30 / Saturday 10:00 - 11:00 5yrs

Your young dancer will learn the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Pre- Primary ballet Syllabus, which will give them a solid foundation and introduction to learning classical ballet. This class is designed for students who can attend once a week and have had their 5th birthday.

 

Wednesday at 5:30 - 6:30 and Saturdays 11:00am- 12:00 pm 6yrs

Primary ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award. The recommended age is from 6 years or in Grade 1 at school. This examination syllabus will assess the students' ability to:


Perform a series of prepared ballet exercises with secure posture, correct weight placement, coordination, control, line, spatial awareness and dynamics.
Dance in time and respond to the music
Dance with expression and communication
Perform two dances

Monday and Wednesday 4:30- 4:45 pm 7yrs

Grade 1 (RAD), ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award. The recommended age is from 7 years or in Grade 2 at school. This examination syllabus will assess the students' ability to:
  • Perform a series of prepared ballet exercises with secure posture, correct weight placement, coordination, control, line, spatial awareness and dynamics.
  • Dance in time and respond to the music

  • Perform two dances
Mondays and Wednesday 4:30 - 4:45 pm 8yrs

*Prerequisites - Grade 1 or equivalent

  • Perform a en pointe with control (Female only)
  • Dance in time and respond appropriately to the music
  • Perform with understanding, expression and appropriate communication
  • Perform a Variation
Tuesday 6:30- 8:00pm and Friday 4:30 - 6:00pm 13yrs
Prerequisite: RAD Intermediate Foundation (5 years equivalent)

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week to be prepared for Examination and assessed on their ability to:
  • Perform a series of prepared ballet exercises with secure posture, correct weight placement, sound coordination, control, aesthetic line, spatial awareness and appropriate dynamics.
  • Perform a en pointe with control (Female only)
  • Dance in time and respond appropriately to the music
  • Perform with understanding, expression and appropriate communication
  • Perform a Variation
Tuesday 4:30- 6:00 pm and Friday 6:00 - 7:30 pm 14yrs

Prerequisite: RAD Advanced Foundation (7 years) Must have completed their Intermediate Examination or an equivalent level in another syllabus.

Ballet students will learn the Advanced syllabus through 2-3 carefully constructed lessons per week and attend at least one intensive week workshop to be prepared for Examination and assessed on their ability to:
  • Demonstrate with ease complex exercises with a high level of technical proficiency (secure posture, correct weight placement, sound coordination, control, refinement of line, spatial awareness and appropriate dynamics.
  • Perform a range of movements en pointe with fluidity and control (Female only)
  • Dance in time and respond with acute sensitivity, and dynamic expression of the music
  • Perform with a high level of understanding, expression and confidence
  • Perform an advanced Variation on Pointe
Tuesday 4:30- 6:00pm and Friday 6:00 - 7:30pm 15yrs

Prerequisite: RAD Advanced 1 (8 years equivalent)
Ballet students will learn the Advanced syllabus through 2-3 carefully constructed lessons per week and attend at least one intensive week workshop to be prepared for Examination and assessed on their ability to:

Ballet for All

Thursday 4:30 - 5:30 pm 7 yrs

These classes are ideal for the student who can only commit to once a week ballet but still would like to take on formal ballet training. The class will address postural alignments, turn- out, port de bras, pirouette and allegro. There will be no examinations for these classes and each student will be placed in an age-appropriate level for a comfortable learning environment.
Wednesday 6:30 - 7:30 11yrs
Foundation Ballet Junior and Senior These classes are ideal for the student who can only commit to once a week ballet but still would like to take on formal ballet training. The class will address postural alignments, turn- out, port de bras, pirouette and allegro. There will be no examinations for these classes and each student will be placed in an age-appropriate level for a comfortable learning environment.
Saturday 09:00 - 10:30 am 

This class is suitable for all  Full-Time & Pre-Professional dancers of advanced level. It is also ideal for professional dancers who want to keep up their training and conditioning. 
Saturday 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
This advanced pointe class is suitable for all Full - Time and Pre-Professional dancers of advanced level. This class will also have conditioning exercises to help strengthen all areas of pointe work training.
Monday 7:00-8:30 pm
Tuesday 10:00 - 11:30 am 


This class is ideal for the beginner or for an adult who wishes to return to dance. The adult learner is encouraged to explore movement at their own pace as well as giving challenges with co-ordinated enchainments. The class will focus on posture, strength and graceful arm movements.

Jazz

Thursday 4.30 - 5.30 pm 5yrs
An introduction to jazz and tap with the emphasis on improving performance quality. Students will be exposed to styles of both jazz and tap.
Monday 6.00-7.00pm 7 yrs

This class will focus on learning dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing rhythms and patterns. It is highly recommended that all students undertake a ballet class to compliment their jazz technique.
Monday 5.00 - 6.00 pm 9yrs

This class will focus on learning jazz technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing rhythms and patterns. It is highly recommended that all students undertake a ballet class to compliment their jazz technique.
Friday 6.00 - 7.00pm 11yrs

This class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street, and Contemporary to help develop a well-rounded dancer.
Friday 5.00 - 6.00pm 14 yrs
This class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street, and Contemporary to help develop a well-rounded dancer.

Tap

Thursday 5.30 - 6.30 pm 7 yrs

Tap dance uses the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. There are several variations on tap dance including rhythm tap, classical tap, Broadway tap, and post-modern tap.

Thursday 6.30 - 7.30 pm 9 yrs

Contemporary

Wednesday 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm 8 yrs
Contemporary or modern dance explores movement in an expressive and creative way combining ballet technique, floor work, agility, storytelling and physical theatre.
Tuesday 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm 11 yrs
Contemporary or modern dance explores movement in an expressive and creative way combining ballet technique, floor work, agility, storytelling and physical theatre.
Tuesday 6.30 pm - 7.30 pm 14 yrs
Senior Contemporary or modern dance explores movement in an expressive and creative way combining ballet technique, floor work, agility, storytelling and physical theatre. To be eligible for this class students must have strong classical ballet skills to draw from.

Extension Courses

Saturday 12:00 - 1.30 pm 8 yrs  
Acceptance into the program is by invitation or audition application only

This extension program is for all students who wish to improve their dance technique. To be eligible for this programme students must already be attending at least two other ballet classes. The class is designed and ideal for students wanting more body conditioning and advanced ballet steps.
Saturday 1:30 - 3:00 pm 11 years

Acceptance into the program is by invitation or audition application only.

This extension program is for all students who are on pointe and wish to improve their dance technique. To be eligible for this programme students must already be attending at least two other ballet classes. The class is designed and ideal for students wanting more body conditioning and advanced ballet/pointe steps. 
When: Wednesdays 1-4.30pm and Saturdays 9-11.30am
Age: Approx 14 to 17 years from Intermediate level upwards

Acceptance into the program is by invitation or audition application only Participation: The program for internal students requires the regular attendance of all their RAD Syllabus classes and contemporary classes.

About: The Elite I Program is open to both external and internal students and is designed to offer students with good potential for a career in dance, to increase their hours of training whilst remaining at their academic school. Combined with their syllabus work, students will be challenged with Wednesday’s coaching and will benefit training with the full-time students on Saturdays. This program also allows internal students to represent the National Theatre Ballet School in competitions nationally and internationally (this is subject to the Directors' Discretion). This program enables students to prepare physically and mentally for the rigours of full-time ballet training. Students will also be the first considered to be involved in any Full-time student performances.

Acceptance into the program is by invitation or audition application only. Participation in the program requires the regular attendance of at least two RAD classes per week. We also encourage all students to attend the contemporary class.

About: Elite II is designed to offer external and internal students, who show the correct aptitude and ability, extra coaching in order to assist their training needs and development. Combined with their Syllabus work, students will be challenged by Saturday’s Coaching and internal students will have the opportunity to participate in competitions*.

Primary Coaches: Associate Director, Claire Campbell with additional coaching from Artistic Director, Damian Smith.

*Participation in competitions is subject to the Artistic Director’s discretion.

Stretch and Conditioning

These very important classes have been set aside so each student can work on elements of
their technique in a more holistic way. These classes will improve any discerning dancer who
wishes to improve and develop their training. The conditioning exercises will help
strengthen the core and refine movement patterns to secure the classical ballet elements of
posture, turn-out and weight placements. The flexibility component will help with
alignments and body lines.

wishes to improve and develop their training. The conditioning exercises will help
strengthen the core and refine movement patterns to secure the classical ballet elements of
posture, turn-out and weight placements. The flexibility component will help with
