Ballet Part-Time Courses

 The National Theatre Ballet School offers a wide variety of dance training including Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, contemporary, jazz and tap from junior to senior levels. The school also provides, holiday courses, Extension & Elite programs. The knowledge and skills gained through completion of the RAD’s qualifications provide lifelong learning and provide pathways to recognized achievement at a high level in dance performance.

PRE SCHOOL CLASSES

Little Nashies (3 – 5 yrs) Thursdays at 10:00 am – 11:00 am

 

The Little Nashies Dance Theatre Classes are the ultimate dance theatre sessions for 3 to 5 year olds. They are inspiring a mixture of dance, musical theatre, storytelling, drama, and singing.

The Little Nashies is a unique class that brings musical appreciation with a combination of music introduced, and this could be the presence of a pianist or an introduction to a musical instrument that helps stimulate the students’ imaginations with a wide range of sounds and musical styles.

 This holistic program is developed for strong engagement, musicality, confidence building, imagination, exploring ideas together, and expressing creativity, all while having fun and making new friends. 

 These programs are an introduction to all aspects of performing arts at the National Theatre Ballet School and National Theatre Drama School. Both schools have built this program together as a stepping stone into further exploration of the organisation’s offering.

Dance Play - (4 - 5 yrs) Mon 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dance Play - (4 - 5 yrs) Sat 9:00 am - 10:00 am

 

This preschool program will introduce children to the basics of classical ballet through creativity, storytelling, and imagination. The class is tailored to the young child who has already had their 4th birthday. These classes prepare all students to enter into the Junior school. 

 

Royal Academy Of Dance (RAD)

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Pre Primary (5 yrs +) Thurs 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm

*Prerequisites: Must be five years of age to enrol 

Your young dancer will learn the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Pre- Primary ballet, which will give them a solid foundation and introduction to learning classical ballet. This class is designed for students who can attend once a week and have had their 5th birthday.

 *One class per week

 

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Primary (6 yrs ) Wed  5:30 pm - 6:30 pm & Sat at 11.00 am - 12:00 pm

*Prerequisites: The recommended age is from 6 years or in Grade 1 at school.

 

Primary ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week. This level will educate the student in a more formal way and build on the skills to be able to  perform a series of prepared ballet exercises. They will learn the basics of  secure posture, correct weight placement, coordination, control, line, spatial awareness, and dynamics of classical ballet.

 

*Two classes per week with a minimum of 40 hours of training to be eligible for the first formal examination of the Royal Academy of Dance.


*All  Junior Level  classes will be involved in two productions per year on the home stage of the school The National Theatre, Melbourne

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Grade 1 (7 yrs ) Mon & Wed at 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm

*Prerequisites: Must be 7 years of age to enrol or in Grade 2 at School

 

Grade one ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award. 

Each candidate will develop  a well rounded understanding of classical  ballet technique appropriate for their age range while  nurturing the awareness of artistry and dynamics through music. The syllabus will promote the joy of  movement, creative interpretation, and a sense of dance and performance quality. Students will also learn character dance. 

 

*Two classes per week accumulating 60 hours of training to be eligible for an Examination or Class Award

 

Royal Academy of Dance RAD Grade 2 (8 yrs ) Mon & Wed at 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm

*Prerequisites: Grade 1 or equivalent must be 8 years of age to enrol or in Grade 3 at school. 

 

Grade two, ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award. *Prerequisites: Grade 3 or equivalent, must be 10 years of age to enrol, or in Grade 5 at school.

 

Grade four, ballet students will learn the syllabus through two carefully constructed lessons per week and attend an intensive study workshop to prepare for an Examination or Class Award.

Each candidate will develop a higher level and well rounded understanding of classical  ballet technique appropriate for their age range while  nurturing the awareness of artistry and dynamics through music. The syllabus will promote the joy of  movement, creative interpretation, and a sense of dance and performance quality. Students will also learn character dance. 

 

 *Two classes per week accumulating 75 hours of training to be eligible for an Examination or Class Award

 

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Intermediate Foundation (11 yrs ) Tue 6:30 - 8:00 & Fri at 4:30- 6-00 pm 

*Prerequisite: Must be 11 years of age to enrol 

 

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the first  Vocational Level examination. Candidates will need to demonstrate classical ballet at a high level including pointe work.  Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry,dynamics,and  musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation that  will motivate students preparing for these Examinations. The candidate will explore the  joy in movement, creative interpretation, and performance quality.  
 

*Two classes per week accumulating 150  hours of training to be eligible for an Examination 

*All classes at this level will be invited to enrol in the specialist Stretch and Conditioning coaching classes

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Intermediate Tue 6:30 - 8:00 pm & Fri 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

*Prerequisites: Must be 12 years of age to enrol 

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the 2nd  Vocational Level examination. Candidates will need to demonstrate classical ballet at a high level including pointe work. Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry,dynamics,and  musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation that  will motivate students preparing for these Examinations. Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Advanced Foundation (14 Yrs ) Tue 4:30 - 6:00 pm & Fri 6:00 - 7:30 pm

*Prerequisite: RAD Intermediate (7 years equivalent training) Must have completed their Intermediate Examination or an equivalent level in another syllabus.

 

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the 3rd  Vocational Level examination. Candidates will need to demonstrate a more mature and a much higher level of understanding of the classical and pointe work technique  Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry,dynamics,and  musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation on pointe.  The candidate will explore and be motivated by the  joy of advanced movements, creative interpretation, and performance quality. 

 

*Two classes per week accumulating 150  hours of training to be eligible for an Examination 

Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Advanced 2 (15 yrs +) Tue 4:30 – 6:00pm & Fri 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

*Prerequisite: RAD Advanced one (9 years equivalent training)

 

Ballet students will learn the syllabus through 2 carefully constructed lessons per week in preparation for the 5th  Vocational Level examination. Candidates will need to demonstrate a more mature and a much higher level of understanding of the classical and pointe work technique. Through the stated elements of assessment, the syllabus will help identify the necessary skills that underpin secure technique, such as core stability, weight placement, turnout and line.  The awareness of artistry,dynamics,and  musicality is promoted through inspired set exercises and a Variation on pointe.  The candidate will explore and be motivated by the  joy of advanced movements, creative interpretation, and performance quality. 

 

* Two classes per week accumulating 150  hours of training to be eligible for an Examination 

Ballet for All

Junior Ballet (7 - 10 yrs) Thurs 4:30 - 5:30 pm

 

These classes are ideal for the student who can only commit to once a week ballet but still would like to take on formal ballet training. The class will address postural alignments, turn- out, port de bras, pirouette and allegro. There will be no examinations for these classes and each student will be placed in an age-appropriate level for a comfortable learning environment.

Teen Ballet (11 yrs ) Wed 6:30 - 7:30 pm

 

These classes are ideal for the student who can only commit to once a week ballet but still would like to take on formal ballet training. The class will address postural alignments, turn- out, port de bras, pirouette and allegro. There will be no examinations for these classes and each student will be placed in an age-appropriate level for a comfortable learning environment.

Jazz

Primary Tap / Jazz (5 – 6 yrs) Thursday 4.30 – 5.30 pm

This combination class encourages our young dances to learn the basics of jazz techniques and the tap sounds of shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. A good class for beginners as it introduces the child to two forms of dance within one class.

Jazz Junior Lv 1 & 2 (7 - 8 yrs) Mon 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Jazz Junior Lv 3 & 4 (9 - 10 yrs) Mon 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm


These classes will focus on consolidating Jazz dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Focusing on artistry and dance fitness for performance. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street, and Contemporary to help develop a well-rounded dancer.

Jazz Intermediate (12 yrs ) Fri 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Contemporary

Contemporary Junior Lv 3 & 4 (8 yrs ) Wed 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm


It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up more elaborate dance routines. 

Contemporary Intermediate (11 yrs ) Tues 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

 

It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up more elaborate dance routines. 

Contemporary Senior (14 yrs ) Tues 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

 

Advanced and complex steps are created exploring challenging aspects of the contemporary technique improvisation. This class is highly recommended for students studying VCE Dance. It focuses on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. Classes start with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build up more elaborate dance routines. 

Extension Courses

Junior Extension (8 years + by invitation) Saturday 12.00 – 1.30 pm

*Prerequisite: This class is by invitation and assessment

 

This Classical Ballet extension program has been designed for the younger age students who wish to improve their dance technique. These classes explore the harmonious engagement of the upper and lower body through carefully constructed enchainments. To be eligible for this programme students must already be attending at least two other ballet classes. The class is ideal for students wanting more body conditioning and advanced ballet steps.  This class is by invitation and  assessment

Intermediate Extension Pointe (11 years + by invitation) Saturday 1.30 – 3.00pm

*Prerequisite: All students must be on pointe to attend this level class. This class is by invitation and assessment

 

This Classical  Ballet extension program has been designed for the Intermediate age students who wish to improve their dance technique. These classes are based on the Vaganova technique exploring the harmonious engagement of the upper and lower body through carefully constructed enchainments. To be eligible for this programme students must already be attending at least two other ballet classes. The class is ideal for students wanting more body conditioning and advanced ballet steps. 

Senior Open Ballet Class (15 yrs +) Sat 9:00 – 10.30 am

 

This class is suitable for all  Full-Time & Pre-Professional dancers of advanced level. It is also ideal for professional dancers who want to keep up their training and conditioning.

Senior Pointe Class (15 yrs +) Sat 10:30 – 11.30 am
*Prerequisite: must be on pointe min. 4 yrs

This class is suitable for all Full-Time & Pre-Professional dancers of advanced level. It is also ideal for professional dancers who want to keep up their training and conditioning.

Elite 1 Program (Age 14 - 17 years , invitation only from Intermediate level upwards)

 

Acceptance into the program is by invitation or audition application only Participation: The program for internal students requires the regular attendance of all their RAD Syllabus classes and contemporary classes.

 

About: The Elite I Program is open to both external and internal students and is designed to offer students with good potential for a career in dance, to increase their hours of training whilst remaining at their academic school. Combined with their syllabus work, students will be challenged with Wednesday’s coaching and will benefit training with the full-time students on Saturday mornings.

This program also allows internal students to represent the National Theatre Ballet School in competitions nationally and internationally subject to the Directors' Discretion.

 

This program enables students to prepare physically and mentally for the rigours of our  full-time ballet training. Students will also be the first considered to be involved in any full-time student performances.

Elite II Program (Age: 11 years , invitation only)

 

 

Acceptance into the program is by invitation or audition application only. Participation in the program requires the regular attendance of at least two RAD classes per week. We also encourage all students to attend the contemporary class.

 

About: Elite II is designed to offer external and internal students, who show the correct aptitude and ability, extra coaching in order to assist their training needs and development. Combined with their Syllabus work, students will be challenged by Saturday’s Coaching and internal students will have the opportunity to participate in competitions*.

 

*Participation in competitions is subject to the Artistic Director’s discretion

Stretch and Conditioning

Stretch & Conditioning Intermediate (11 yrs ) Tue 5:30 - 6:30 pm

 

These very important classes have been set aside so each student can work on elements of their technique in a more holistic way. These classes will improve any discerning dancer who wishes to improve and develop their training. The conditioning exercises will help strengthen the core and refine movement patterns to secure the classical ballet elements of posture, turn-out and weight placements. The flexibility component will help with alignments and body lines.

 

Stretch & Conditioning Senior (14 yrs ) Tue 7:30 - 8:30 pm

 

These very important classes have been set aside so each student can work on elements of their technique in a more holistic way. These classes will improve any discerning dancer who wishes to improve and develop their training. The conditioning exercises will help strengthen the core and refine movement patterns to secure the classical ballet elements of posture, turn-out and weight placements. The flexibility component will help with alignments and body lines.
