How to Audition For the Full Time Dance Courses in 2023

Students wishing to apply for a place on any of the National Theatre Ballet School’s Full Time courses must complete an audition.

Audition Dates for January 2023 entry

AUS Melbourne Saturday 20 August and Saturday 29 October 2022 at the National Theatre Ballet School Studios

Digital video submission – AUS/NZ applications open 6 August 2022 – 18 December 2022

Digital video submission: International applications open 6 August 2022 – 18 November 2022

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Acceptance is by audition and proof of academic suitability for the course applied for. Students must meet all requirements and pass all units of competency in each term or subsequent year to obtain the qualification. Students applying for Diploma and above will need to provide evidence of completion of Year 10 or equivalent (language, literacy and numeracy at level 4). Any student wishing to access VET Student Loans for Diploma or Advanced Diploma courses will need to provide proof they meet the criteria.

IN-STUDIO AUDITIONS:

Step 1 – Complete the Audition Application Form and pay the application fee.

To complete the Application Form please provide:

  • Your personal details
  • Guardian Details (if under 18 years of age)
  • Current ballet School
  • The Ballet Syllabus you have trained in
  • Your current training level
  • List any injuries
  • Submit 3 Photos (These do not need to be professionally taken)
  • Photo 1. In parallel (6th position) arms by side.
  • Photo 2. Standing in dégagé decoté (seconde) with arms in seconde position.
  • Photo 3. In first arabesque (any side)
  • Pay the fee of $80.00

Step 2 – Your application will allow you to book into your chosen audition date. An email will be sent confirming your booking.

Step 3The Audition. You will be guided through an open class where the audition panel will watch you respond to instruction. The audition will include an information session where prospective students and/or parents questions can ask questions.

Step 4 – You will be notified via email if your audition has been successful.

Step 5 – If successful, you will be emailed a link to complete the enrolment form and the included Language, Literacy and Numeracy Test (LLN). Your enrolment is not confirmed until this has been assessed. We will contact you within 3 business days if there are any issues with your form.

Step 6 – Once your enrolment is processed, you will receive information on your course term dates, uniform, student handbook, orientation and commencement day dates. 

DIGITAL SUBMISSION 

Step 1 – Complete the Audition Registration Form and pay the application fee.

To complete the Application Form please provide:

  • Your personal details
  • Guardian Details (if under 18 years of age)
  • Current ballet school
  • The Ballet Syllabus you have trained in
  • Your current training level
  • List any injuries
  • Submit 3 Photos (These do not need to be professionally taken)
  • Photo 1. In parallel (6th position) arms by side.
  • Photo 2. Standing in dégagé decoté (seconde) with arms in seconde position.
  • Photo 3. In first arabesque (any side)
  • Provide a video link 5 min (maximum) Barre work consisting of: plie (demi and grande in 1st, 2nd and 5th), tendus and jetes, adage, grand battement. This section should ideally be filmed on a diagonal angle, rather than face on.
  • 10 min (maximum) Centre work consisting of: Adage, Pirouette enchainment (pirouettes endehors and endedan), Petit Allegro, Medium Allegro and Grande Allegro.
  • The video must begin with the applicant holding their name and date on a piece of paper and filmed in one continuous take,
  • Pointe work: Females only – 5 min (maximum) centre work including pirouettes only and/or a traditional Variation
  • Pay the fee of $80.00
What happens after I have submitted my video?

Step 1 – Your video will be reviewed by the National Theatre Ballet School Directors. 

Step 2 – If successful, you will be invited to a live group audition via zoom for 45 minutes class where the Director will have the opportunity to see you perform. 

 

Dates for zoom audition classes: 

Tuesday 30 August 9am AEST

Tuesday 11 October 9am AEST 

Thursday 24 November, 9am AEST 

AU/NZ applicants only – Tuesday 10  January 2023 9am 

There will be a 15 minute information session after the class to explain the process if you are successful at this second round.

 

Step 3 – If your audition class is successful, you will be emailed the course level we are offering, and an invoice for the enrolment fee which you are required to pay within 7 days of accepting your offer. 

Step 4 -You will be emailed a link to complete the enrolment form and the included Language, Literacy and Numeracy Test (LLN). Your enrolment is not confirmed until this has been assessed. We will contact you within 3 business days if there are any issues with your form.

Step 5 – International students will receive their Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) and will need to gather their documents for their visa application. The Australian government advises allowing 6-12 weeks for visas to be processed once all your documentation is submitted.

Step 6 – Once your enrolment is processed, you will receive information on your course term dates, uniform, student handbook, orientation and commencement day dates.
