The National Ballet School has been training dancers for more than 80 years. Our supportive, creative teaching staff are some of Australia’s most experienced industry professionals who are passionate about teaching and preparing the dancers of the future. Classes include the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, Contemporary, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Tap and Ballet Extension Programs. We also hold regular School Holiday Programs throughout the year. We welcome students of all ages, genders and skill levels. The new Nashies ballet classes offer a weekly 45-90 minutes of instruction, practice and enjoyment as Nashies of all ages learn the foundations of ballet; from posture, turn-out, coordination and line to the difference between a pirouette and a demi-plie.
Nashies lets you dip your toe into the world of ballet, learn new skills and explore your creativity. Classes are ideal for all ages including newcomers and toe-dippers, show-ponies, Billy Elliots, Princesses and Golden Girls.
Our highly experienced trainers will guide Nashies through the foundations of ballet responding to the needs and wishes of the class to ensure a safe, nurturing and, above all, enjoyable experience for everyone.

Established in the UK in 1920 as the Association of Teachers of Operatic Dancing in Great Britain, the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus offers an internationally recognised hierarchy of learning and achievement for ballet dancers from pre-primary entry, through five graded examinations, followed by four vocational level examinations.

Australia’s leading exponent of Character Dance, Alida Segal designed and wrote the six-level International Character Dance Syllabus. Suitable for ballet students in year seven or above, with a minimum three years of classical ballet training, the syllabus includes active physical practice of technique and movement, as well as information about music and rhythm, elements of ethnology, physics and design. This provides a holistic education and understanding of the development of dance styles and a more well-rounded ballet dancer.

Contemporary Dance classes focus on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, use of body weight, efficiency of muscle use and safe body alignment. All classes begin with a comprehensive warm-up and gradually build to more elaborate dance routines.

The Seniors classes are highly recommended for students studying VCE Dance. Students create advanced and complex steps and explore challenging aspects of contemporary technique improvisation.

Jackie Rae Lythgo’s Broadway-based Tap Dance classes teach a broad array of tap styles, musicality and performance skills that contribute to the development of an all-round Tapper.  Students have fun learning to connect to music, rhythms and physical dynamics style, while also receiving industry leading training that can inform a professional dance career.

Jackie Rae Lythgo is a triple threat performer who studied at the Victorian College of The Arts, The Johnny Young Talent School, Karen Stephens, and Dance Factory. As an actor, singer and dancer, Jackie Rae has worked with top Australian and international directors, musical directors, and choreographers in a career that spans corporate, commercial, TV, band, dance and theatre. Jackie teaches Jazz, Tap and Musical Theatre dance classes.

Jazz is a very popular, high-energy, modern dance-form incorporating styles that first emerged at the turn of the 20th century. The style has grown in popularity over the decades moving from dance halls to discos, traditional to contemporary. Students of all ages and abilities will develop an array of relevant  techniques and skills before they perform in the showcase event in The National Theatre.

Under the guidance of triple threat performer Jackie Rae Lythgo, Musical Theatre classes are a must for any student who would like to complement their Dance and Drama training and develop professional standard performance skills. Students will receive high-level training in voice, acting, movement and dance. They learn to tell a story by using their entire body and how to develop a broad range of Musical Theatre styles.

This class can be taken as a stand-alone class, but it is highly recommended students also attend other dance and drama classes to reach a Triple Threat standard.

The National Ballet School is committed to cultivating excellence in dance and preparing young talent for pre-professional training and a career in dance.

Our Extension Classes have been designed for younger students who wish to extend their dance technique. Dancers will explore the harmonious engagement of the body through carefully constructed conditioning and stretching exercises. They are also challenged by learning advanced Ballet enchainments. To be eligible for this Extension Classes, students are required to attend the appropriate RAD Classes twice a week.

The National Ballet School’s Elite Pathways Programs identify, nurture and cultivate young talents through a committed schedule of extra training (up to 12 hours), extension classes, industry competitions and pre-vocational development of the necessary mental and physical rigors required to pursue a career in dance. Elite Pathway Programs instil future dancers with heightened levels of quality, artistry, musicality, technique and discipline. Elite students have more opportunities to train in a holistic and healthy program. The Elite Transitional Program is the final steppingstone to vocational training, preparing students for a full-time commitment to their chosen career.
